Alive with the buzz of locals bartering fresh vegetables and baskets of tropical fruit, amongst the heady smell of Jack fruit (and many other exotic fruits) we continue to the site of the cathedral built for Seven Years from 1873 to 1879. The Anglican Cathedral of Christ Church was built in Stone Town (the old part of Zanzibar city) in the place where the biggest slave market in Eastern Africa operated.
Its altar was placed exactly where the slaves for sale were whipped. On the floor, among the benches, there are black cobblestones as a remembrance of the dungeons used for slaves in the basement. Outside the Cathedral, there is a stone monument showing four people enchained by their necks as a way of reproducing the way in which slaves were offered to buyers
From here we visit the residence of the late Sultans of Zanzibar, ‘Tip Tip House’, the Old Fort, ‘Peoples Palace’, and the House of Wonders, full of intrigue and vivid history from a bygone era. The tour ends with a stroll through the narrow streets of the old stone town, the heart of Zanzibar’s vivacious history with time for shopping. Lunch at a local restaurant. 1500hrs, a boat trip to Prison Island, the former prison for slaves and quarantine station for Zanzibar, is a worthwhile experience. Here you will also experience giant tortoises in the wild. Dinner at a restaurant then overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Transfer to Mangapwani village
After breakfast, transfer to Mangapwani village. Mangapwani is a town on the Tanzanian island of Unguja, the main island of Zanzibar. It is located on the northwest coast, 25 kilometers (16 mi) north of the Zanzibari capital of Stone Town.
The town’s name means “Arabian Shore” in Swahili, a name which probably dates from the black-market slavery days of the 1840s to 1880s. The shoreline here contains numerous caves, some of which were used for holding slaves at that time. Among the caves is a popular attraction, the Coral Cavern, which is located two kilometers south of the town. The caves of Mangapwani were discovered by Joseph Thomas Last, a British explorer, and missionary in East Africa in the 1870s.
Lunch at Mangapwani Serena Restaurant. The restaurant is located on the outskirts of Zanzibar stone town. The Serena Mangapwani Restaurant and Water Sports Center is a great destination. Visitors to Mangapwani are offered a fresh seafood barbeque cooked to perfection by Serena’s expert team of chefs. The atmosphere is informal and friendly and the restaurant comprises a series of traditional Makuti Bandas, all set on a lush hillside overlooking an idyllic beach.
