7 Days Cycling to Usambara Mountain

7 Days Cycling to Usambara Mountain

Tanzania presents an unparalleled opportunity for a bicycle tour journey. From the foot of Kilimanjaro, where mountain villages and coffee farms abound, to the vast plains beyond and into the Usambara Mountains with further exploration to the Pangani Coast, a plethora of dirt roads, footpaths, and single-tracks are available to explore.

Our range of bicycle adventure tours caters to all skill levels and can be custom-designed to include half-day, full-day, or multi-day tours. All tours are guided and come with mountain bikes and cycling helmets. Multi-day rides are fully supported by a Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4. A bicycle tour is a perfect centerpiece to your African adventure or can be added as an extension to any itinerary.

The Mount Usambara to Coast Bike Tour is a physically demanding cross-country bicycle ride. We travel on dirt roads and forest paths across high ridges and along river valleys dotted with villages, proceeding from the northwest edge of the Usambara range to its southeast corner, where we reach the flat coastal plain that leads to the Indian Ocean.

The Usambara Mountains in Tanzania’s northeast are a range of the Eastern Arc Mountains, formed two million years ago. They are divided into two sub-ranges, with the West Usambaras being higher. The mountains are covered in lush tropical rainforests and were once home to the Bantu, Shambaa, and Maasai communities. The region was later settled by German colonists and became part of British-mandated Tanganyika after World War I.

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your driver guide will warmly welcome you. From there, you will be transferred to Moshi town, which should take you around 45 minutes to an hour of driving time. Once you arrive in Moshi, you will spend the rest of the day at a comfortable lodge. Dinner and overnight accommodations will be provided at the Weru Weru River Lodge.

Day 2: Moshi Town to Mombo Village

Today’s drive will take us through multiple lush valleys and small villages, eventually leading to Mombo village where we will arrive in time for lunch. The rest of the day will be spent relaxing at the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay will be at Mambo View Eco Lodge.

Day 3: Mambo Village to Mkuzi Village

Today, our bike ride will take us through several lush valleys and small villages, leading to Shume, a former German colonial outpost. Many of the early settlers’ buildings are still in use in Shume. After leaving Shume, we will have to climb two forested mountain ridges and then descend into a densely settled valley. We will be having dinner and spending the night at MKUZI CAMPSITE after completing a distance of approximately 61km cycling.

Day 4: Mkuzi village to Kizara village

We will begin our journey with a steep climb up a dirt track that leads into the forest. As we ascend, we will be rewarded with breathtaking views in all directions. After that, we will make a long descent through charming villages nestled on the mountain slope. Our route will take us over ridges with gentle drops that lead to the fertile valleys below. However, we will also have to tackle a long 5.5km uphill stretch that hugs a mountainside. Our day’s ride will either end at Bumbuli (42 km) or 15 kilometers further at Funta. We will load the bikes onto the trailer and drive for 50 kilometers across the hot and dry Lwengera Valley. Finally, we will arrive at the campsite situated at the road’s end on the edge of the Nilo Nature Reserve. We will have dinner and spend the night at KIZARA VILLAGE CAMP. The approximate distance we will cover while cycling is 42 km.

Day 5: Kizara Village to Amani Nature Reserve

We start our journey on a dirt track that runs through the dense forest of the Nilo Nature Reserve. The first few kilometers are all about enjoying the scenic beauty of the eastern Usambaras and several small villages that pass by as we ride along the mountain ridge. We pass through forests, tea plantations, and villages, all located strategically on the steep mountain slopes. After a long downhill ride, we enter the Amani Nature Reserve and head uphill for the final stretch to Emau Hill Camp. We will have dinner and spend the night at Emau Hill Camp. The cycling distance covered will be approximately 38 km.

Day 6: Amani Nature Reserve to Pangani

On the final day of the cycling trip, we will cover the most distance. However, it will be mostly downhill, starting with a gentle descent through the dense tropical forest from Amani in the mountains to the gateway town of Muheza. As we continue, we will cross a tarmac road marking an abrupt change from a lush mountain environment to a coastal plain. The Indian Ocean will be in sight, drawing us along on this mostly flat section to our final destination at the beach. We will have dinner and stay overnight at Peponi Tented Lodge, which is approximately 78 km away from our starting point.

Day 7: Pangani to Kilimanjaro Airport

Following your breakfast at the Camp, you will commence your journey back to Kilimanjaro, which will take approximately six hours. This will allow you adequate time to catch your flight back home or continue your travels to your next destination. During the day, you will have the opportunity to indulge in a locally prepared BBQ lunch in Moshi town before your transfer to the airport.

We hereby conclude the tour, and we hope that you had a memorable experience with us.
